Redwings Round the World
The Cats
Basil and Sybil were our two cats that started the Redwings odyssey with us in Hong Kong. For us, our various crew members, and all who knew them they were a significant part of the Redwings experience and identity. Sadly, Sybil went missing in Italy and Basil in Barcelona. We are still heartbroken almost two years later. We (and they!) prepared the page below when we were first leaving Hong Kong. We'd love to hear from other cruising cats and or offer advice to those considering taking cats on a voyage (highly recommended - they make great cruising companions and the primary risk is losing them to a car or other misadventure in port [same risk as house cats], not that you lose them at sea). July 2000.

| Inspecting the 406 Mhz EPIRB | Time to move on the boat! |
Basil and Sybil are our two cats. They are brother and sister and are nine months old. Until we moved on the boat several days ago, they had spent their entire lives in a Hong Kong apartment. An exciting day included a half an hour work out with "mousie on a stick" or a cockroach kill. We are not sure what they think about their new home or if they have any idea of what the cruising life will be like. So we've decided to let them contribute their own page to the site.

We are brother and sister and are nine months old. We picked out humans out at the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in March, 1997. In April, we decided we wanted more out of life than just chasing each other around the flat so we sent out humans to Singapore to pick up a sailboat that would take us on a world cruise.
Over the past five months, our humans have been preparing our boat for the cruise. We have been sleeping, eating, and playing while they have been scraping paint and cleaning bilges.
The cruising life holds many attractions for us. Our humans will always be around to provide cuddles and support whenever we require it. They will never be able to go "out". We have also heard that there are fish in the ocean that fly and land on the decks of boats. We like to watch birds, we like to eat fish. Fish that fly would be the ultimate.
If you are interested to hear what its like to cruise with humans, you can e-mail us at redwings@attglobal.net.
We are interested in hearing from other "cruising cats". Tofino and Fluffy (RIP)on S/V Aramoana get decent coverage in their human's page.
